Characterized by geometric shapes, stylized natural forms and the use of luxuriuos materials Art Deco originated in France and spread quickly all over the globe during the 1930s. Interest in the style was revived in the 1960s, partly as a result of the work of Bevis Hillier who recalls his triumphs and mistakes in writing the first book on the subject and co-organizing the Minneapolis exhibition in 1971... |

Rare Art Deco

What period is your house from? Which period/style to you prefer?
I have to say I am a fan of 1930s housing, both the "suburban" mock tudor semi or detached, but also the art deco style house (much rarer)
Though victorian/edwardian brick houses are also nice.
Maybe you live in a GeGeorgianouse in Bath?
Do you love your 60s/70s home (!)
Oncverted warehouse?
Apologies for poor spelling - was trying to cook lunch while typing this question!
H.potter fan - Yes I have been to the red house - very homely!
I live in a 1930's semi. It had only had one owner from new and had not been touched or updated in all the years the previous owner lived here.
Not even gas in the property. Original kitchen and original bathroom!
Unfortunately it costs three times as much to preserve/ restore something as it it does to replace so due to lack of funds I live in museum .
My fave bit is the original windows ( I loathe PVC ). Slim glazing bars and purple and blue stained glass. No house is the same in our road. Some have arched or diamond shaped windows etc..
I could drone on about the attention to detail,it thrills me. I do love 1930's anything but my previous house was a victorian terrace and I loved the plaster work and high ceilings in that house.Less so the lack of light.
It disturbs me greatly when people turn their period homes into a modern affair, there is nothing wrong with wanting a modern style , but if that's what you want then buy a new build.
The first resident in our road died aged 96 at the beginning of the year and her house was sold. We ( me and next door neighbour) have been terrified a builder would come and turn it into a block paved pvc nightmare.Luckily it seems the new owner has limited funds also ( wahoo)...maybe the current financial squeeze might do some good in saving little gems such as these
I'd love a Lutyens house *sigh*
